Fast Shoes (2006) 3'
for Oboe, Oboe d’Amore, and English Horn

Look at the score

Composed during the early summer of 2006, Fast Shoes returned to the oboe trio medium after the composition of the wind-quintet movement, Off the Cuff. It was written specifically for Danna Sundet's summer oboe camp as a way to show off each member of the oboe family to the high school oboists in attendance. An important part of its composition is the fact that when reading the same music, the three instruments sound parallel major triads, a favorite device of mine. Each instrument has a chance at the main themes, and overlapping scales and arpeggios show off the instrumental color variations. The title comes from a child I babysat named Corrine, who attributed her ability to run fast to her new shoes. It is dedicated to my teacher and mentor, Danna Sundet.
