Streams was composed at the behest of Leah Schaaf, to whom it is dedicated, during eight days in January 2009. This piece is an exploration of the mostly conjunct melodic writing I discovered when writing the final movement of my wind quintet, Impulses. Most solo instrument works of the twentieth century are in one of two styles: highly acrobatic virtuoso writing or mostly extended techniques. I wanted to see if I could write mostly melodies without accompaniment, as I previously required the accompanying chords to make sense of the melodic line. The title implies the attempt at organic writing that makes circular references to itself as well as the many possible characters one can achieve with the bassoon.
